3/27 North Sound Earth Month kickoff events

Mount Vernon WA Mar 27, 2008

How about a month of Earth Day activities to learn about and care for the health of our Sound?

Puget Sound Earth Month 2008 kicks off April 4 and 5 in the San Juans with double-header talks on Puget Sound health in Friday Harbor and Eastsound. People For Puget Sound Executive Director Kathy Fletcher discusses “Marine Stewardship” at the Whale Museum on Friday, April 4. Science Director Doug Myers discusses “Climate Change in the San Juans” at Emmanuel Church in on Saturday, April 5. Both talks are free and the public is invited to a pre-talk reception.

April 5 and 6 are Earth Month Grand Opening weekend at the Children’s Museum of Skagit County at their new location in Cascade Mall. Families and kids are invited to get their Puget Sound Passport and decorate cardboard Earth cutouts. A community free day sponsored by People For Puget Sound is scheduled for April 8.

On Sunday, April 6, join Bellingham author Clyde Ford and People For Puget Sound aboard the Snow Goose for an afternoon trip around Bellingham Bay and share in some local stories and what’s going on in cleaning up and protecting the Bay.

All Earth Month event information is found online, as well as how residents can become “Sound Citizens” this Earth Month by doing some simple things to Save Our Sound (S.O.S.).

Earth Month 2008 is made possible in part by grants from Puget Sound Energy and from the Washington Department of Ecology.

Coming up on April 19, volunteers are needed to restore Union Slough near Marysville where the “Union Slough Earth Day Weed Out” is scheduled. Contact Keeley O'Connell to volunteer.

Also coming up on April 19, the public is invited to take a free ride on Skagit Transit to and from the Swinomish Earth Enhancement Celebration at the Swinomish Community near La Conner to work on restoration projects, enjoy a salmon lunch, and take part in music and educational activities. To register, contact Britta Eschete, (360) 336-1931.
