April Earth Month Launched in Seattle With Toxic Whales Talk, Educator Workshop, and Beach Walks
3/27/08 Seattle Earth Month kick off events
Seattle, WA Mar 27, 2008
If every day is Earth Day, how about a month of Earth Day activities in Seattle to learn about and care for the health of our Sound?
Puget Sound Earth Month 2008 kicks off April 3 at REI with Dr. Peter Ross of Fisheries Canada talking about the latest research on our beloved orca whales. “Toxic Whales: What Does The Future Hold For Resident Killer Whales” is the topic of this month’s “Exploring Puget Sound” Speaker Series.
On Friday, April 4, about a hundred environmental educators will gather at Cooper Elementary School in South Seattle for the “Storming the Central Sound” all-day workshop. Puget Sound Partnership executive director David Dicks will provide a keynote address and educators will spend the day sharing teaching and learning resources.
On Saturday, April 5, join People For Puget Sound and marine education specialist Alan Rammer on the beach at Carkeek Park to walk the beach and learn about ‘touching etiquette’ when interacting with tidepool animals.
On Sunday, April 6, Heron Habitat Helpers and People For Puget Sound lead a free, guided tour of urban habitat and restoration at Kiwanis Ravine in Seattle.
All Earth Month event information is found online, as well as how residents can become “Sound Citizens” this Earth Month by doing some simple things to Save Our Sound (S.O.S.).
Earth Month 2008 is made possible in part by a grant from the Washington Department of Ecology.
Coming up on April 12 is Seattle’s Green Festival and on April 19, the big Duwamish Alive! Earth Day restoration at eight sites involving over a thousand volunteers in bringing Seattle’s hometown river back to health. To volunteer, contact Jamie Wine, 206) 382-7007.
A free, full color map of public access and restoration sites in the Duwamish watershed will be distributed on April 19 at Duwamish Alive! Copies to news media are available in advance by contacting Cari Simson of the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition, 206-234-5102.
