The public is invited to kick off Puget Sound Earth Month in April with two free programs about the health of Puget Sound and the island environment.

People For Puget Sound executive director Kathy Fletcher will speak at the Whale Museum at 7 PM on Friday, April 4, about ‘The State of the Sound and the San Juans.” Kathy is the founder of People For Puget Sound and former chair of the Puget Sound Water Quality Authority. She currently serves on the Puget Sound Partnership’s Ecosystem Coordination Board, the state’s Oil Spill Advisory Council, and on the Northwest Straits Commission.

The Friday Harbor event is cosponsored by The Whale Museum and the San Juan Nature Institute.

On Saturday, April 5, People For Puget Sound’s science director Doug Myers will speak at 7 PM at Emmanuel Church in Eastsound on “Climate Change in the San Juan Islands.” Doug was previously with the Puget Sound Action Team, the precursor of the Puget Sound Partnership, and joined People For Puget Sound in 2007.

Both evening events are preceded by a free open house reception at 6:30 when community members can meet staff and learn about some of the programs and projects underway by People For Puget Sound in the islands and the straits.

Both events are part of People For Puget Sound’s Earth Month 2008 celebration to raise awareness about the health of the Sound and to engage citizens in actions to restore the Sound’s health. These Earth Month 2008 presentation are funded in part through a grant from the Washington Department of Ecology.

These events are free and open to the public but reservations are appreciated so we know how much food and beverage to prepare. Please RSVP to Julie Lein at (206) 382-7007, and specify the event your will be attending.
