Washington Stormwater Issues Come Up for Review

Which cities and counties should require developers to use low-impact stormwater management will be the next big decision for the Washington State Pollution Control Hearings Board.

Bremerton and Kitsap County are among 28 local governments trying to prove that they are different from their larger municipal counterparts and should not be mandated to adopt low-impact development requirements.

Low-impact development, or LID, involves various techniques for retaining stormwater on site for discharge into the ground.

The hearings board recently ruled that low-impact development should be the preferred method for the state's largest cities and counties. Now, the board must decide if those same standards should apply to medium-sized cities and counties.
