WHAT OUR MEMBERS & VOLUNTEERS HAVE TO SAY

Anne K

Anne Kirchhoff, Volunteer • Seattle

“It is nice to be involved with a group that sees the broad picture and the impacts people are having on Puget Sound, a group that is actually making a change that people see regionally and has had a sustainable impact.  I have been so impressed with the depth of the people involved and surprised by the amount of restoration work that is being done.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Disturbing news came in October when 7 whales disappeared from Puget Sound’s endangered orca population, almost 10 percent of the population.

But, right after that, the election created a new spirit in the land, a feeling that all things are possible.

We teach our kids that they can do anything they set their minds to.  Isn’t that true for us adults, too?  “Hope” and “change” are today’s words for Puget Sound.

That’s why a few generous people gave us this challenge: Raise $200,000 by December 31, 2008 and get another $100,000 in match. $300,000 in 2009 will help bring Puget Sound – our orcas, salmon, shellfish, seabirds-- back to health. It will help us:

  • Speak out and guide the Puget Sound Partnership’s “action agenda” to restore the Sound to health by 2020
  • Secure permanent funding to keep a rescue tug standing by year-round at Neah Bay to protect Puget Sound from a catastrophic oil spill
  • Recruit and train 1,500 volunteer stewards to restore critical shoreline habitats and make certain those shorelines are protected by strong, enforced regulations
  • Educate and engage 1,200 families and volunteers through beach outings and to reach out at community events throughout Puget Sound
  • Recruit 400 Citizens Lobby Day activists to go to Olympia on February 19 and engage them in discussing Sound issues with their legislators

Please donate today and help us meet the challenge of Saving Our Sound in 2009.
